Acidic and Alkaline

Some foods taste sweet, while others taste salty, bitty or sour. A lot of substances in our homes produce different colour change when tested with litmus papers.


The taste and ability to change the colour of litmus papers are used to determine the chemical properties of substances.


Litmus papers are chemical indicators. There are blue and red litmus papers. They change colour when come into contact with acidic or alkaline subtances.

If a substance changes the colour of a blue litmus paper to red, it is acidic.
